In the early days of space exploration, it was important to establish a place where objects could be fired at in order to learn more about the universe. The Cape Canaveral Air Force Station was designed as agunnery range and gunnery training ground for American soldiers and sailors during World War II. The facility also served as an air-defense base for Florida during that time. The launch site of America's first satellite, Grumman F4F Wildcat 2, occurred from here on July 16, 1957. It was also here that Colonel John Glenn became the first person to orbit Earth while wearing a space suit. Other launches from this location include Apollo 11 (the first manned mission to land on Mars), Gemini 6 (the first human spacecraft flown in orbit around Earth), and Delta 9 (the first US satellite launched into orbit). After the Cold War ended, the Air ForceStation came down into disuse but remains open today as part of Florida'sSpace Operations Center complex. Today, it is home to two large ranges: one used by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for flying planes and rockets; and another used by private companies such as Lockheed Martin USA for testing new weapons systems.

Cape Canaveral is a small city in Citrus County, Florida, on the eastern edge of the state's Capistrano Peninsula. It is located at (33.533334,-80.766667), about 15 miles (24 km) east of Orlando and 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Tampa. The population was 1,071 at the 2000 census. The first permanent European settlement in Cape Canaveral was made by Spanish settlers in 1763 when they began to build Fort Santiago de Cuba on an island off the coast of Cape Canaveral. The fort was destroyed bySummary Native Americans in 1768 and never rebuilt. In 1821, a group of Englishmen under Captains John F Kennedy and James Kelleher arrived at Cape Canaveral after sailing around Africa to find new land for England's navy. They traveled downriver to where Fort Washington now stands and built a shipyard there that became one of America's most important naval yards during the 19th century. In 1917, World War I veteran Ensign Clarence King set up shop as a mechanic at the shipyard before becoming its owner and operator four years later when his brother-in-law, Rear Admiral George Dixon Hill purchased it from King. His son General Hill continued operations until his death in 1961; thereafter it passed through several hands before being sold to entrepreneurs Al Horvitz and Jerald Smith who developed it into what is today known as Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS). A public-private partnership led by CCAFS opened its gates on July 20, 1997; since then it has been home to more than 100 airlines including United Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines as well as two space launch sites – Space Launch Complex 37 (SSL37) which launches NASA's Ares I rockets and Space Launch Complex 40 (SSL40) which launches Russian satellites into orbit

Cape Canaveral, Florida is a small town located inBrevard County, Florida. The population was 1,711 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area. The community began as a tiny hamlet on the banks of Cape Canaveral Bay in 1927, when William Auld and his brother-in-law, J.D. Stephens bought 640 acres (240 ha) of land east of Fort Myers Beach. The Auld brothers named their new community "Canaveral" after one of their parents' maiden names, Canby. In 1957, Cape Canaveral became the home for two United States Air Force bases: Eglin AFB and MAFB (later KSC). With these additions to its population came new challenges and opportunities for growth. In 1961, Ulysses S. Grant US Army Field fortifications were completed at Cape Canaveral; they would become known as "the Gates of Hell." These fortifications ringed the town like a fence and served as an early warning system against any potential threats to nearby communities such as Daytona Beach or Boca Raton. In 1970, Lockheed Martin Corporation moved its headquarters from Marietta GA to Cocoa Beach FL then into vacation villas on Highway 1 just outside of Cape Canaveral proper before moving back into buildings on White Sands Road in 1981 following completion of their now iconicSkunk Works facility there that still occupies an acreage adjacent to the airport today! In 1990s capecranial businesses grew rapidly with hotel development by Marriott/IHG along with jobs at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center which had moved from Huntsville Alabama earlier that decade! By 2000s there was much discussion about whether or not Cape Canaveral should be annexed by Sanford Seminole county because it had been reported that government spending within Orland Park has outstripped private investment within town despite having more residents!!! However this talk died down due primarily to budgetary concerns around newly created state agencies such as State Health Department and Corrections corporation which have swelled many times what previous governments could afford without putting pressure on public coffers!! In recent years local officials have made moves towards annexing Cap Canaveral but are met with resistance from some residents who feel their civic rights are being violated by annexation!!! Today Cape Canaveral is known for its commercial aviation industry including both support flights for NASA missions and passenger travel through Delta Airlines using Ellington Municipal Airport across the bay
The Canaveral Peninsula is a peninsula located in the central part of the state of Florida, and it is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico to the south and east, Lake Erie to the north, and Muskegon Heights to the west. The area was first settled by Native Americans, who named it after Cape Canaveral on Palm Beach County’s eastern coast. In 1893, President Grover Cleveland designated Canaveral as the site for an airfield that would serve Pensacola and Mobile Bay areas in Alabama and Mississippi. The airport opened in 1928 and served as a major hub for American Airlines until it was closed in 1990. Today, Canaveral Airport serves as a base for NASA’s Kennedy Space Center – home to both Launch Services Expeditions (ALSEP) launches and commercial space flights – as well as various military operations.
