In the early 1950s, the Cape Canaveral Site was a launch site for American missiles. The site had been leased from Florida by the United States Air Force in 1947. It was then that General Electric Corporation began construction of their new plant at Kirtland AFB, Ohio. The company also built a factory to produce gunsight sights for military aircraft, and they needed space to do so on their own property. They leased out part of their land to the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA) in 1951-1954. ABMA used the area as a missile test range until it was closed down in 1976.
