The story of gun lights begins in Cape Canaveral, Florida on July 16, 1944. The first light was seen by the crew of USS Enterprise when they were making their way to NAS Key West for a maneuvers exercise. As Enterprise made her way towards the Spanish Key area, she observed a large and bright light up in the sky. It wasn’t long before everyone on board realized that this was no ordinary object, and soon they could see it had an odd looking design. As Enterprise got closer to the light, she could make out that it was very large and round with what looked like small arms mounted on top of it. At first, no one knew how to react as they didn’t know what this object was. Then someone heard someone shout from the cockpit “That is not a ship! It is an UFO!” This sparked off a few other voices echoing back “It is definitely an UFO!” Some sources say that some members of the crew started yelling at each other for different reasons- whether because some wanted to be mistaken for UFOs or because they just didn’t believe in them at first. At any rate, Enterprise began flying closer to the UFO and soon enough identification became possible- it was indeed a gunlight aircraft belonging to USAAF Squadron VX-814 which had recently arrived at NAS Key West from Japan. The squadron leader ordered all guns blazing as he began his approach to land on nearby Mote Marine Field after completing his exercises aboard Enterprise. Although initial reports indicated that both pilots survived contact with UFOs during their landing attempt but lost altitude due to engine trouble (later proven true), there are also several accounts claiming either loss of control or serious injury to both pilots as a result of contact with unidentified aerial objects….
