In 1959, Cape Canaveral was the site of the first successful launch of an American satellite. The launch occurred from a Star-2A rocket, and it was the first time that an American satellite had been launched into space. The launch also marks the beginning of a long and successful relationship between America and Soviet Union. The United States has since launched more than fifty satellites into orbit using Star-2A rockets, making it one of the most reliable launchers in the world. In recent years, other types of rockets have been used to send satellites into orbit, including Delta IV Heavy and Ohio State University’s Booster Rocket II. It consists of eight municipalities: Cape Canaveral City; Clearwater Beach; Daytona Beach; Fort Pierce; Hollywood; Jacksonville Beach; Port Orange ; Sanford ; Titusville ; and Volusia County . The Canaveral Municipal Airport serves both local residents and visitors to the region with general aviation traffic as well as launching services from Space Coast Spaceport . The airport covers an area of 723 acres (269 hectares) and has three runways: 3/21—longer than any other national airport serving space coast customers—and 3/19/36 are both instrument rated for IFR operations only. As one of only two spaceport airports in Florida that also offers scheduled passenger service , it provides convenient access to many southeastern locations including Orlando International Airport
