The Canaveral Missile Range is a firing range in Cape Canaveral, Florida that hosts the United States' only intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capability. The range was first opened to the public on May 18, 1949, and has been used by both the US Army and the USAF for test firings of missiles since then. Currently, it is used by the Air Force's Titan IV launch vehicle program as well as other militaries around the world. The history of bullets begins with their use in firearms dating back to early times when bows and arrows were used to hunt deer and other small game. Bullets were also fired from cannons during World War II in order to bomb targets overseas. However, bullets were not actually invented until 1859 when Captain John Millington Lewis designed a bullet that could travel up to 350 miles per hour (500 kilometers per hour). Although rifles had been used throughout history for hunting large animals such as elephants and mammoths, they did not become effective at hitting moving objects until about 1800 when Nicholas-Jacques Conte developed an artillery round that could penetrate armor at a distance of 100 yards (91 meters). This led to development of rifles using more powerful ammunition that could hit moving targets much closer than ever before. By 1865, rifle rounds had reached speeds of over 375 miles per hour (500 kilometers per hour). Bullets started being developed for handguns in 1857 when Samuel Colt patented his Improvement on an Old Gun which allowed pistol rounds to travel at high speeds without exploding or detonating prematurely like earlier projectiles. Bullet usage slowly began spreading into artillery starting with British 115-pounder cannon shells traveling at rates up to 1,000 mph (1,600 kilometers per hour) during the Napoleonic Wars. Although Firearms Manufacturing Act Amendments of 1903 made automatic pistols illegal in America,[1] this did not stop American civilians from purchasing guns with pistols caliber rounds still being exported into European markets under license through mail order firms such as Browning & Watney.[2]

In the early hours of July 20, 1969, a gaseous fire broke out in the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The cause was an electrical short that caused an uncontrolled release of gas from a steam-powered engine. The resulting fireball and intense heat destroyed buildings and killed four people. The event is still hailed as one of the most catastrophic accidents in American history. It has been cited as the start of the Space Race and the evolution of space exploration. It also helped spur development of modern day air traffic control systems and led to greater understanding of how jet engines work.

Cape Canaveral is a small town located in western Cocoa County, Florida, approximately 25 miles east of Orlando. It was originally founded by the Spanish settlers in 1764 as Ybor City and became known as Canaveral when it became part of the United States during the American Revolution. The town was annexed to Orlando in 1868 and developed into a busy commercial center for citrus and other crops. After World War II, Cape Canaveral grew rapidly as an air force base and then aerospace production facility. However, economic decline caused its closure in the 1980s.
