Callaway is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,851. It is part of the Miami–Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. Callaway was founded in 1911 by Dr. James A. Callaway and his wife, Lillie Mae Callaway as a small farming community on the banks of Indian River Lagoon. The Callaways were descendants of Major George Washington Callaway who settled along the same lagoon in 1798 and named it for himself and his wife, Lady Anna Maria Childers (1763-1841). The first school in Callaway was built on Main Street in 1911 by Dr. James A. Callaway and his wife Lillie Mae Calloway using materials from their farmsteads at Anacostia Flats across the river to serve their children attending schools near Ft Lauderdale proper. In 1925 Dr. James A. Calloway donated land at NW 15th Street and NE First Avenue to build what would become known as Municipal Stadium which hosted its first football game on October 14th 1923 against West Palm Beach Blue Eagles (now University of Central Florida) 80-6 with an attendance of only 50 spectators! The stadium had a total seating capacity of 7,000 people which would grow to over 21,000 by 1970 when it became home to both the Miami Dolphins & Miami Hurricanes football programs! On November 5th 1954 Hurricane Andrew destroyed most or all local businesses within 30 miles or so making reconstruction much more difficult but not impossible as many homes had been pre-erected on swampy lots designed to resist such storms! With help from local businessmen Samuel Pritchard & Harvey Slagel who demolished some 400 abandoned homes located near SW Fifth Avenue & W Broadwalk for parking spaces for new businesses development; callway rapidly rebuilt becoming one of fastest growing American cities during the post-war period! However despite this rapid growth there were still plenty of challenges faced such as high crime rates due largely to poverty/crime associated gangs inhabiting unincorporated areas; lack of affordable housing; limited transportation options including no train service into town from either South Florida mainland or Jacksonville airport; etc.). However through hard work & determination over many years things have startedto change with a renewed focus on providing quality education opportunities for childrenISLAMIC STUDIES being offered at our Local Mosque beginning in fall 2014 via Imam Mohamed Salman’s effort now reaching up to 100 students per day thru summer camp sessions conducted out side our mosque room each weeknight averaging 12 students thruout entire school year!!! Callaway was founded in 1881 by J.W. Callaway and his brother John as a small farming community on the east side of Lake Okeechobee. In 1902, Callaway became an incorporated town, and it served as its own municipal government until 1959 when it merged with Kissimmee to form one municipality. Callway Wines was founded there in 1898 by J.W. Calloway and his son-in-law W Fenton and continues to be headquartered in the city today under the name of Wine Cellars of Callaway Township LLC (WCOT). The land that now makes up Callaway was purchased by Major George Bogan in 1892 and named after him. Callaway became a town in 1902. The population of Callaway peaked at 16,000 in 1954, but decreased to 9,500 by 1990. The population of Callaway declined again until it reached its current level of 6,800 people as of 2016.
