Callaway is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The Callaway post office was established in 1892 and discontinued in 1957. It was first settled by Captain James Wighton Callaway and his family on November 16, 1881. The original plat for Callaway was called "East Addition". Callway Dam formed by the construction of the nearby Calloway Lake power plant in 1951: it forms most of today's town boundaries. In 1907, an elementary school opened within one mile (1 km) of where present-day Callaway Hospital stands today. A second elementary school followed in 1957; both closed when the high school moved to its current site three years later. In 1947, Drue Lantz donated land east of I-95 for a community college which would become known as University Community College - now Florida State University - but never built anything on it because he died before it could be completed! In 1955, Mrs. John Hargrave donated land west of I-95 for what would become Baptist Health Medical Campus - now Orlando Regional hospital - but never built anything on it either because she died before it could be completed! Finally, in 1984, developer Harry Crouch bought all remaining unbuilt property from Mrs. Hargrave and began work on what would eventually become downtown Callaway with funding from Gulfport businessman Aubrey McClendon Jr.. Two years later, McClendon sold the downtown mall to developers who named it "The Mall at Jacksonville" and call it that ever since... until Hurricane Katrina hit). Downtown business had been booming thanks to new development along I-95 while housing prices were falling throughout much of Northeast Florida due to overbuilding statewide; however lack of development near downtown caused both houses prices and jobs opportunities to plummet after Katrina struck;[3] as a result many businesses have reopened or have relocated within city limits only recently making up some lost ground back into credibility among residents once again trying to make a go-around without putting themselves through such difficult times just outside their doorsteps (just think about all those big box stores right outside your window these days!). Downtown redevelopment has since picked up speed once more with more new apartments being constructed just off US 1 & SR 417(and soon another hotel/motel planned),[4] so if you're looking for something different this year than last there's definitely something worth checking out... even if you don't live here anymore!
