Callaway, Florida is located in the Miami-Dade County area of South Florida and has been home to a number of scopes since the late 1800s. Many of these scopes were built by local businessmen and men who made their money hunting big game or fishing in the area. Some of these scopes still remain in use today and are some of the most popular items on shelves at many stores. One of the earliest scopes to be built in Callaway was a 12-inch Meade telescope that was donated to Callaway by Dr. George Meade. This telescope was used for research purposes at various institutions throughout North America before it was transferred to Callaway City Hall where it currently resides. The Callaway Observatory also donated an 8-foot refractor telescope to Miami University in 1903 which became one of the most popular telescopes on campus. The university continues using this telescope today as part of its Astronomy Department curriculum. In 1907, a 24-inch refractor Telescope owned and operated by George Purdy was donated to Callaway by his brother, Jno., after he lost his interest in hunting big game and decided he would rather focus on astronomy instead. The Purdy Telescope is still used today at the nearby Parkland Museum which is near where it was first installed back then! Many other famous astronomers have also contributed property, equipment, or both to various institutions such as Miami University (1903), Southern Methodist University (1927), Jacksonville State University (1964), US Naval Observatory (1972), etc.; all while keeping their eyes peeled for new stars and planets! In 1908, American astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered what would come to be known as “Hubble” Space Telescope #1 which remains operational today! The history of calloway scopes can be traced back even further though; some examples include: A 10x Resetti microscope given away free by concessionaire Arthur Resetti during World War I; A pair of 20x Schmidt binoculars donated by Mr. & Mrs. Hirschfeldt during WWII; A 16x Dobsonian skywatcher mirror from Johnson Optics Corp./Crosley Camera store purchased from Don Crosley during 1958; An 80mm eyepiece from Browning Camera store purchased from Don Briggs & Sons Incorporated during 1960; A 100mm eyepiece from Diop Optiques/Bausch & Lomb camera store purchase from Maurice Baudoin during 1963; A 2Jy astrograph prism originally bought from Ritchey Instruments/Leaston Instruments Co./British Industrial Astrophysical Observatory purchase(?) via mail order sometime between 1957-1959…the list goes on! These donations give us insight into how people have felt about optics over time and how they continue to provide enjoyment for those who love them today!

Callaway is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Callaway is located on U.S. Route 1 north of Jacksonville and east of St. Augustine.[2] The town was founded by early settlers in 1887 as a small farming community on the southeast corner of what are now Milliken Boulevard and US 1B in central Monroe County[3]. The name comes from local Creek Indian Chief's call to his people "call away" meaning "to go away".[4][5] A post office called Callaway was established in 1890,[6] and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907.[7] In 1922, developers named George Wickenburg and Arthur Laughlin bought 4,000 acres (1 km2) northeast of Callaway for $1 million[8]. They laid out dune communities called Gainesville Beach, Plantation Oaks, Belle Isle Hills and Belle Terre Islands which would ultimately become parts of Jacksonville. By 1925, over 60% of the land had been dedicated to developing; there were only 5 homes scattered among these developments[9], but they soon became known as "the development towns".[10][11][12][13] By 1961, when Interstate 95 bypassed downtown Jacksonville to enter the city through Orange Park,[14], most residents had either moved away or left for more suburban lifestyles[15]. However, some descendants- mostly young men working downtown jobs- kept their roots alive through golf clubs and country clubs that still exists today. Today's Callaway Golf Course opened its doors in 1969 as one of just 10 courses open to public play across America at that time[16]; it has since expanded into an 18-hole championship course with lofty par 72s measuring 6½ miles (10 km). One reason this course remains popular is its challenging layout - it features long pars with tight fairways flanked by sand bunkers – making it ideal for players who want something different every time they hit a ball. CALLAWAY'S HISTORICAL EVENTS: On July 2nd 1893 - Gussie Ewing purchases 640 acres (248 ha) northwest of Callaway from Jno Pemberton for $510 per acre ($0/$0/ha).[17] This tract would eventually become known as White Sands Country Club where Gussie's son Broderick built his first golf course back home...in 1902! Callaway, Florida was founded on November 3, 1875 by James Fenton Callaway and his wife, Laura. The town was named after Callaway's father-in-law, Amos Butterfield. In 1912, the village of Calloway merged with the neighboring town of Belle Glade to form a new municipality. On December 1, 1975, the towns of Belle Glade and Carpentersville were consolidated into Callaway. In 1985, Callaway became an official city in Broward County.
