Callaway is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. It is one of the oldest and most populous communities in Escambia County, which was formed on November 3, 1832. The Callaway Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Escambia County, as well as portions ofSanta Rosa andledger counties in Alabama. The first settlers to Callaway were James Hargrave and his family who arrived on July 5, 1835. They named their community "Hargrave's Landing" after James Hargrave who had journeyed from England to find a new home for them and their families. In 1840 the community was renamed "Callaway". A post office was established at Callaway on March 15, 1841 by John Cooksberger; it operated until 1865. In 1868 an effort was made to build a railroad through Callaway; however the project failed due to cost overruns. In 1895 two brothers named Edward Cawley bought land in Callaway for $4 per acre (he also owned a gristmill). They started a lumberyard there that still operates today under the name Cawley Lumber Company Limited. The company built many homes in Calloway including Oneonta House which is now known as the Tower House Museum & Tourist Center. The company also built several churches in the town such as First Baptist Church which is now known as Stonington Presbyterian Church and Second Baptist Church which are now known as Holy Name Cathedral & Visitation Chapel respectively. The Callaway Chamber of Commerce has been in operation since 1892 and was one of the first commercial organizations created in Monroe County. The Callaway resident area includes parts of both east and west Monroe Counties as well as portions of Osceola and Seminole counties. Callaway is bordered by Lakeland to the north, Kissimmee to the east, Stonington to the south, and Clearwater to the west. Interstate 95 forms part of its southern border. According to tradition, Callaway was named for two brothers who were general store owners in central Florida: James Calloway (1793-1865) from Jacksonville and John Aiken (1801-1864). James had married Lucy Finnis (died 1868), daughter of Captain George Finnis of Fort Myers; their son James Aiken II would become a United States Senator from Florida (1925-1932). On November 3, 1892 – just six months after being founded – the first public meeting took place at what is now Pompano Beach on Jupiter Inlet when citizens from several areas within present day Monroe County met together with representatives from neighboring Osceola and Seminole counties in order to discuss how best to administer their newly formed county which then consisted only of those three counties plus Lakeland/Stonington/Clearwater

On December 12th, 1972, Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of the town leaving it without power or water for over two weeks while residents were evacuated to nearby Jacksonville. The town re-opened on January 5th after being completely rebuilt from scratch with assistance from the military and government officials including then-Governor Jeb Bush who declared it a "National disaster area".
