It is located on U.S. Route 27 and state Road 9A, east of Orlando and west of Sanford. Callaway was founded by John Swayze in 1892 as a cattle drive settlement on what is now US 27 near modern day Callaway Springs. In 1905, Callaway became an incorporated town with a school and post office; it had a population of 298 people when it incorporated. In 1925, Callaway annexed the neighboring community of Spring Hill; the annexation was made effective on February 2 that year because Spring Hill had not ratified its incorporation ordinance yet. In 1959, Pinellas Countyadded Callaway to its county boundaries after taking over most of Monroe County's land mass from the previous Seminole Indian Tribe lying within its borders since before Spanish exploration began in this area in 1565 A.D.; Pinellas also acquired land from other Native American tribes that were ceded during these early days including the Kissimmee Tribe which lies adjacent to present day Orange County proper within today's Sanford/Orlando metropolitan area).
