Callaway, Florida is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Callaway was founded in 1881 and incorporated as a municipality in 1907. The name is derived from "calley" meaning “a small clearing or glen” and "call" meaning “to call to attention” or “to summon” someone. The first settlers in what became Callaway were men who came overland from Georgia in 1841. They named their land for American Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene, who had fought at Saratoga and Yorktown. In 1881, Callaway incorporated as a municipality under the laws of Florida. At that time it consisted of just a few hundred residents on an all-white town square with two churches and one schoolhouse overlooking the bayou below. But within a few years there were more than 2,000 people living in Callaway proper and much of the surrounding countryside. The city's growth began slowly but surely; by 1915 it had grown to its current size with a population of 10,500 people living in 5 wards: Westside (including parts of Jacksonville), Northeast ( encompassing downtown), Southwestern ( bounded by First Street on the east and Third Street on the west ), Central ( bounded by Fourth Street on the north and Fifth Avenue on the south ), and East Side ( including parts of downtown). Each ward had its own City Councilmember who made decisions about local issues such as planning/development control, fire protection etc.. During World War II many businesses closed down because they could not compete against enemy production quotas for materials needed for war effort; however, most citizens chose to stay home during wartime since there was no immediate threat from abroad. However some did leave to join forces with other countries overseas while others decided to return after hostilities ended...the last group being those who left Callaway primarily because they could not find jobs back home again following prohibition repeal which happened nationally upon Victory over Japan . After VJ victory many jobs woke up available due to post-war reconstruction efforts which included setting up companies such as Lockheed Martin & Boeing military planes manufacturing plants outside Jacksonville) which created employment opportunities for locals as well... thus helping start anew what would become known today as "Callaway's roaring twenties". From its humble beginnings Callaway quickly grew into one of America's leading towns – changing hands multiple times between owners before settling permanently within Monroe County when it annexed neighboring East Lake in 1922 after becoming one unit with Jones Beachrand Township . Growth continued through World War II until 1946 when business restrictions caused another closure; however this time it wasn't due to lack resources but rather interest rates having sky rocketed causing out-of-state buyers only wanting high yield bonds instead of howthatafter typical familyowned businesses took advantage o hid products inside
