The company became one of the largest golf brands in the world with over $5 billion in sales by 2009. The Callaway post office was established in 1892 and discontinued operation in 1957. The first settler in what is now Callaway was James A. McGowan who arrived on March 10, 1892 from Ohio with his family. McGowan's father had been born in Virginia and moved to Mobile, Alabama when James was five years old. His mother died when he was young and he eventually married a woman from Mobile named Sarah Ann Robertson (1861-1939). They settled near east Jacksonville on a tract of land that they purchased from John Fenton for $1,000 (). In 1896 the McGowan brothers bought an additional piece of property which theynamed "Rancho" after their father's ranch back home in Virginia (). In 1902 William Southerland donated 160 acres (0.6 km2) of land to Callaway Township for agricultural use only () after experiencing heavy foreclosure rates during the Panic of 1907 (). The township plat () included three blocks - present day Main Street (), West First Street () and East Second Street () - lying along what are now US 95/SR 456 between SR 514 (now US 12) and SR 516 (now SR 7), just south of I-95 exit 137B (). In 1920s George Waddell operated a grocery store at 403 North Main Street (). In 1929 JE Kauffman opened his Service station across from the service station on Old Business Road (), west of present day Main Street(). Kauffman also ran Callaway's first gas station on Railroad Avenue off US 95 north side near intersection with CR 610 (. North side road became US 12 about this time). Kauffman also built several homes around this time including one located northeast corner lot on Northeast Second Avenue (), east side of current day SW 2nd St., now part of NW 4th Ave.. By 1933 most businesses were closed as World War II began(): GAS STATION: George Waddell served as owner / operator until 1939; KAUFFMAN SERVICE STATION: operated by JE Kauffman until 1951; then Swanson Garage & Supply Co.; later Great Lakes Tire Store Inc.; finally Sears Department Store (); Post Office:established 1893; discontinued 1957; renamed Callaway Township Hall 1993-. All businesses except GAS STATION are still open today.: lodge grounds at Rancho were used intermittently as military training fields during World War II.: After World War II ended all farms were abandoned within Calloway Township but some remain extant such as SW 2nd St., NE Second Ave., SE Third Ave., etc.; main street has been widened considerably since its original width.: According to The History Channel's “Florida” show there are over 50 buildings still standing in Calloway dating back to 1800s!: Today there is only one business left active - Great Lakes Tire Store Inc.- that has been here since before 1923!: According to lore many early settlers came into contact with Seminole Indians through trade which led to the development of agriculture.: There are no roads or transportation available within exterior boundaries anymore so residents must rely primarily on public transportation.: There have never been any fires anywhere within exterior boundaries due to lack thereof:/
Callaway, Florida was founded on August 3, 1879 by Isaac Callaway and his wife Rebecca. The town was named after Callaway's father, who had homesteaded in the area in 1857. Callaway first traded goods with Indians and then developed a cattle ranch. In 1916, the Callaways donated land to build the current campus of Florida State University.
