They named their land "Callaway" after one of their fathers, James Callaway Sr., who had settled there in 1824. In 1836, the Miami and Pensacola Railroad reached Callaway from Ocala; this allowed for more commercial development within the boundaries of the new town. In 1868, John Aiken bought 1/4 mile (0.6 kilometer) of surrounding property east of the town square for $1 from James Snedeker to build a cotton gin andAgricultural Experiment Station known as Aiken's Cotton Mill; it became known as Aiken's Mills after him. In 1870–71 he built two more houses on his lot: One served as conference room for civic meetings at First Presbyterian Church; the other housed dispensary equipment used by Drs Samuel Jourdan and Alonzo Cushing during an epidemic affecting slaves in Jacksonville that year. It was not until 1905 when Spanish flu began ravaging North America that residents realized they needed to keep their homes close to medical care facilities if they wanted to avoid becoming infected themselves; at this point they built four white frame houses on Third Street between Bellaire Boulevard and US 41 (now US 441). From 1906 until 1915 Fenton Gentry operated a grocery store on White Road just east of Third Street opposite where today’s Barnes & Noble store stands – it remains one of only two buildings still standing in downtown Callway dating back to that period! During World War I all profits from Gentry’s operations went into fundraisers for soldiers fighting overseas - so much so that when Prohibition came along years later many people did not believe food could be sold without selling liquor too! However with advances in refrigeration technology Grocery Outlet Corporation was founded adjacent to Barnes & Noble today - making it one of oldest retail businesses west sideCalloway! By 1938 there were over fifty businesses operating inside Town Hall including fifteen banks but all have since closed or been taken over by larger competitors like Walmart etc... . Phone service was originally provided by United Telephone Company which continued until 1968 when State Farm took over citing competition from Sprint Wireless Incorporated which purchased United Telephone Company for $160 million dollars! Today both franchises operate outvessels under State Farm name although Sprint provides technical support should anything go wrong! . . . . Callaway is located on the east coast of Lake Okeechobee and north of Kissimmee. The name Callaway comes from two settlements: one in 1827 by Andrew Calloway and Watauga Cherokee chief John Ross, which was later renamed to called "Callaway" after him; and another post office established in 1868 at what is now known as intersection of US-1 and State Road 471 (now SR-4), about south of present-day downtown Callaway. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,531 people, 553 households, and 392 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,898.7 people per square mile (1,341.6/km²). There were 612 housing units at an average density of 1,362.2 per square mile (500.0/km²).
