Callaway is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, Callaway had a total population of 7,903. The first settlers in Callaway were farmers who arrived around 1820. A post office was established in 1824 and remained in operation until 1876. In 1840, three brothers founded a sawmill on the Stonington River just south of Callaway. By 1850, the mill had become one of the largest sawmills on the east coast and produced lumber for local markets as well as export to New England and Canada. The brothers died young in 1851 and their father took over management of the mill until it went out OF business by 1862. In 1873, Jno Dickey bought the mill from its original owners and continued to run it successfully for forty years until his death in 1937; during that time he also built several homes within walking distance of the millrace where he worked. In 1951, when Monroe County was created from land gained fromthe Seminole Wars (1865–1868), Callaway became part of its new county seat and prospered as an agricultural center with wheat production being one mainstay; however by 1970 cattle ranching had become predominant due to changes in farming techniques brought about by technological advances such as tractors and feeders which allowed large herds to be managed more efficiently than ever before.
