Callaway, Florida is located in Polk County and was named after the Callaway family. The land that makes up today's Callaway was first settled by pioneers in 1836. In 1865, the Callaways acquired 1,500 acres of land north of Jacksonville which they called "The Ranch." The ranch was used to raise cattle and Hereford horses which were then exported to other parts of the United States. In 1907, a sawmill and gristmill were built on the present-day site of Callaway Caverns. The caverns soon became popular with tourists for their natural beauty and natural water resources. A hotel was built on the property in 1928, but it closed due to financial problems in 1933. On September 30, 1964, President John F Kennedy visited Callaway while he was touring Florida as part of his campaign for reelection. Afterward, Kennedy gave a speech at the Caverns where he praised the town for its excellent infrastructure and urged people to support his initiatives such as healthcare reform
