Callaway, Florida is a small town located in the state of Florida. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. Callaway is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and it has a sister city relationship with St. Petersburg, Florida. The first people to live in what is now Callaway were Native American Indians who hunted and gathered around Lake Okeechobee. In 1837, Major James Wilkinson and his brigade of United States Marines landed on the shores of Lake Okeechobee and founded Fort Walton Beach on Gold Coast Island as part of a campaign against Seminole Indian warriors led by Chief Osceola. On February 17, 1838 Captain John Ligonier established Fort Moultrie on an island inlet near present-day Callaway when he learned that Seminole forces had invaded Spanish territory east of Jupiter Inlet. In 1861 Colonel Edmund Kirby Smith erected a battery on land at present-day Park Boulevard to protect Fort Walton Beach from Seminoles during the Confederate blockade runner campaign known as "the siege of Jacksonville." In 1892 Callaway's only store opened its doors; JL Wray & Sons Grain Merchants Incorporated was founded by Judge Julius Levy Wray with $4,000 from his father-in-law Jacob Levy who also owned J&J Shoes Company in Tampa Bay. With modern transportation available and advances in refrigeration technology, store shelves were stocked with fresh produce year-round until recently when vegetables became popular for winter storage due to their low water content (about 25%). The grocery closed its doors for good in 1984 after more than 40 years in business; however, local residents continue to visit the store every day to pick up groceries or take advantage of gift certificates they can offer for special discounts or sales items not found elsewhere within town limits. Overlooked but still significant are two contributing factors: First were JLWray's efforts to provide leadership within an often difficult commercial environment while also working cooperatively with other businesses within town limits - such as Park Boulevard Coffee Roasters -to promote growth along Park Boulevard which bordered Interstate 95 then State Road 7 (now Old US Highway 92) back then; secondly was advancements made in refrigeration technology over time which allowed larger quantities (up to 144 cartons/case) of groceries without having them cook below room temperature so customers could enjoy them fresh off the shelf; this trend continued into the 21st century until large supermarkets came online providing similar selections without packaging altogether which impacts prices somewhat but overall quality remains high due outside pressure from Walmart et al.; finally education plays a role too – today there are several dozen adults certified through Community Supported Agriculture programs who contribute theiragricultural expertise and skills directly back into support functions within Town Hall including product recalls/testing/ analysis etc., thereby perpetuating sustainable practices among locals).

Callaway is located on US-441 east of Jacksonville. The town was founded by John Callaway in 1892 as a small agricultural community on beautiful Clearwater Bayou. The name came from the natural orange trees that grew in the area and were called "calloway" because their fruit resembled those found near Savannah, Georgia. The first post office was established in 1893 and named for John Callaway's father-in-law, James McKay. Early residents engaged in agriculture but soon began to import goods from Ohio and other states for sale at local stores and plantations near Jacksonville. By 1910, there were few homes left standing in Callaway and only one store remained open throughout all of Monroe County when it merged with Duval County to form the state of Florida. In 1924, after years of effort by farmers and businessmen who pooled resources to build a large cotton gin and stockyards on Clearwater Bayou (now US-441), Callaway became an important center for production of Florida's largest kind: cottonseed oil. Today still one of its most well known businesses is Tyson Foods' processing plant which opened in 1984 adjacent to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
