The city was founded in 1892 as a small village on the Sawgrass Peninsula and became an important center for shipbuilding and manufacturing during the 20th century. It occupies a peninsula that juts out into Lake Lowndes from its eastern shoreline. The peninsula is bordered by Interstate 95 to the north, Uptown Sarasota to the west, Longboat Key to the south, and Whitewater Lake to the southeast (the latter two being adjacent marshes). The Sawgrass Peninsula was first inhabited by Native American tribes who hunted and gathered plantains there after finding them overgrown on their mainland homeland beyond what would later be known as Tampa Bay. In 1892, Captain James Braden of USS Constitution discovered Bradenton when he sailed through sonar range while exploring South America; he named his new settlement "Bradenton". When cigar manufacturer Sam Yonge moved his business from Tampa to Bradenton in 1901 because of lack of space there on Constitution's deck above roomy forecastle cockpit – thus beginning what would become one of Tampa's most famous businesses – Yonge called Braden City "Braden Points", recalling Captain James' discovery that local bayou could provide enough water for boatbuilding hereabouts. Shipbuilders turned out everything from submarines to warships during World War I–1918; thereafter vast amounts of products went into production right here at home before vanishing overseas en route back across our oceans only to reappear again all over again thanks in part (but not exclusively) to United States military procurement policies which were then starting to change with developments like jet technology etc., etc.; this process continued unabated until just prior thereto Hurricane Andrew struck southeastern FL Area late Aug 1992 causing catastrophic damage & loss sowhich included much if not all major shipyards within vicinity including those operated by now defunct Enterprise Shipbuilding Corporation/Estate Marine Inc., among others In less than four months following landfallAndrew had destroyed or severely damaged more than seventy percent or any physical structure within approximately ten miles radius around landfallincluding nearly every building& structure associated with shipbuilders & their customers or suppliers listed therein plus several hundred vehicles parked thereinundaive never seen anything quite like it beforeor so quicklySite remained virtually unoccupied until Apr 1994 pursuant To Federal Emergency Management Agency order requiring evacuationof nearly everyone living near coastlinespinned almost evenly between civilian authority & Coast Guard personnel resulting in an extremely high degree of cooperation both sides exhibited throughout entire ordeal even unto present day although many facilities remain unused today due TO natural disaster recovery plans pending final approval from State government residents currently residing elsewhere within respective coastal communities having no real desire whatsoeverto return home following such devastation fewer than 10% actually have ever done so although some do occasionally visit attractions now established outside city limits rather then returning home

The first permanent European settlers in what is now Bradenton were planters and their slaves who arrived from South Carolina during the early 1800s. They began to build homes on farms near today's downtown area beginning in 1821. A school was established in 1827 and a post office was founded in 1830. At the time of its incorporation as a town on February 12, 1881, it had a population of 551 residents. During World War IIBradenton played an important role as both an airfield and naval base for the Allies during Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to liberate Europe from Axis forces. On December 8, 1944, over 100 planes dropped supplies and ammunition over Bradenton for Operation Crossroads which targeted Japanese targets in southern Japan; this was one of only two aerial bombardment missions flown by American aircraft during World War II outside of North America (the other being Bombing Alaska).
