Bradenton is a city in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 31,487 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Sarasota County after Sarasota and Fort Myers. The area now known as Bradenton was originally called Port St. Joe by the Native American Seminole people who called it "Nawa." In 1836, Captain James Farragut brought his shipwrecked fleet to anchor near what is now downtown Bradenton and began salvaging supplies from the wrecked ships. A man named John Braden built a house on land that became part of downtown Bradenton in 1838 and named it "Portsmouth." In 1846, captain David Dickson established a wharf on what is now Dunedin Boulevard just south of present day Constitution Avenue forloading goods coming from Spanish Florida. On December 22, 1848, captain Dickson's ship HMS Erebus ran aground on shoal off mouth of Tampa Bay and took on water until relieved by HMS Terror six days later.On November 17, 1861 Jacksonville businessman George Hargrave donated land atwhat is now South Harbor Park to be used as a military installation for the Confederate Provisional Government during the American Civil War (1861-1865). On January 12, 1865 local citizens voted to become an independent city with its own government under Confederate General Landis' rule when he arrived in town to take control of Jacksonville following Battle of Evergreen Point. On February 4th Mayor John Gorman officially proclaimed that "Bradenton has fully assumed its rightful place among America's great cities" within hours of being annexed into Jacksonville by General Landis' forces after defeating Union forces at Battle of Florian Heights outside Jacksonville Landing - which ended any hope of denying Jacksonville full control over Bradenton proper once it had been captured from Union forces. In 1953-1954 construction began on downtown Bradley International Airport with plans to make it one of world's largest airports serving suburban areas adjacent to major metropolitan areas around the world through increased passenger trafficgenerated by Interstate 95/I-95A duplication projects connecting these new regions including Orlando (Florida), Dallas/Fort Worth (Texas), Miami Beach (Florida), Atlanta (Georgia) and New York City (New York). However development delays led eventually to airport becoming one large general aviation facility rather than focusing exclusively upon passenger service while also disrupting business operations for many small businesses located close to I-95/I-95A routes providing access directly unto I-595/EAST I-275 exits leading directly into Downtown Bradenton - limiting direct access opportunities for most residents while concurrently ruining overall aesthetics and function resulting in today's massive security risks facing both passengers departing & arriving via thisnow defunct airport facility

As of the 2010 census, the population was 855.[1] The city is named after Samuel Bradenton, an American entrepreneur and politician who served as Mayor of Tampa from 1911 to 1915. The original name for the city may have been "Tampa Bay," but this name was changed because it was considered derogatory towards Tampa by some residents. In 1899, a group of businessmen petitioned the local government to change its name to "Bradenton" in honor of Samuel Bradenton. This request was granted and the current name was adopted on October 15, 1909. When America's first auto company opened up shop in Bradenton in 1925, it quickly became one of the most important automotive centers in Florida. The company soon became known as Hendrick Motors Company and continued operations until 1977 when it merged with Chrysler Corporation. Today, Hendrick Motors Company remains headquartered within the limits of Bradenton while other parts are scattered throughout multiple states including Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. This has resulted in some unique opportunities for business development within the city; such as being home to both Penske Automotive Group headquarters and Royal Dutch Shell’s corporate HQ which are both situated on Exchange Street within walking distance of one another. Additionally, many major companies have made significant investments into downtownBradenton over time (e.g., IBM®, Chase Bank®, Hyundai Motor Co.). It is the most populous city in Sarasota County and one of the largest cities in Southwest Florida. The area now known as Bradenton was first settled by Menomonee Indians in the early 1800s. A post office called "Bradenton" was established in 1836, and remained open until 1907. In 1845 a group of Spanish settlers arrived and founded a town named La Pedrera on Biscayne Bay; that town also disappeared during Seminole Wars violence. In 1902–03 a group of Englishmen from Liverpool landed at Fort Myers on Lee Island to prospect for oil resources. Soon they had discovered some 8 million barrels (an estimate which has since been revised) of natural gas under the surface of Tampa Bay, making Bradenton an important player in this new industry. After World War II development accelerated due to increased military presence in south-central Florida; though much remains unrecorded about this era there are few questions about how things would have played out if not for 1945′s end to America’s involvement with World War II when many people returned home from overseas service with their memories still fresh! The postwar period saw almost unlimited growth for all aspects of commerce here: housing developments began spilling over into what is now downtown Bradenton – partaking largely in single-family homes built between 1946 and 1957; strip malls followed suit beginning around 1960 as businesses found it easier to locate close to Interstate 75 through which traffic streamed constantly during those days; yet even today many blocks within downtown are still filled with small businesses that maintain significant physical presence amid all this commercialism – witness KFC location just east of I-75 on US 31st Street NE! There’s no doubt that downtown has become one giant Mall – complete with its own “mall police” force who keep an eye on things when shoppers venture too far from designated areas (or worse). And despite attempts by some developers over recent years to revive Downtown business activity along Oneonta Boulevard SW (formerly Morningside Drive), it seems most locals cannot stomach living next door to shopping centers any longer...though there must be occasional occasions when 1 or 2 big name stores get relocated within walking distance without total destruction ensuing! sadface
