Bradenton, Florida is a city located in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 97,604 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–Sarasota–Hillsborough Combined Statistical Area. Bradenton is home to Hillsborough State University and two major airports - one serving Tampa and the other serving Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. The region around Bradenton has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 2,000 years. The area now known as Bradenton was first settled by Europeans in 1695 as part of the Plantation of Miami Campaign under Spanish leadership. In 1763, British General James O'Hara captured Fort Caroline on Pensacola Bay and named it after himself, George O'Hara; later that year Captain John Smith built Fort Charlotte on an island in Apalachicola Bay to serve as a base from which he could launch attacks against Spanish installations along the Gulf Coast. In 1821, Gaines purchased land grants from several Seminole chiefs including Chief Toccoa and established Gainesville near what is now downtown Bradenton. During the 19th century many citrus fruits were grown here including oranges, apples, pears and grapefruit; also steelhead trout (now stocked with rainbow trout) were common fish fished in local rivers during this time period. Many industries grew out of agriculture such as dairying (poultry), sugar cane production (cane sugar), cattle farming (milk production), shipbuilding and machine manufacturing during this time period; however most residents today live within walking distance of either downtown or Hillsborough Stadium where they can enjoy various cultural attractions such as art galleries, museums and music venues. In 1907 Tropical Storm Agnes knocked down power lines within town limits leaving much of central Bradenton without electricity for days; however damage caused by storm wasn't extensive enough to warrant rebuilding until 1912 when wires were re-erected throughout town boundaries following another tropical storm called Hanna which struck just south of town on October 15th that year causing widespread destruction including entire neighborhoods destroyed or damaged beyond repair On December 20th 1910 a severe tornado outbreak touched down nears what are now Ponce de Leon Boulevard east of I-75/US 41 then raced north through rural areas before striking downtown WSRP telephone exchange building killing four people inside before dissipating On January 10th 1911 a severe lightning strike downed power lines right outside city limits injuring many people so much so that authorities ordered all lights off streets in downtown until morning By 1913 Bradford had regained some cohesiveness leading to its incorporation into Hillsborough County on February 3rd 1915 becoming one municipality among many dotting Everglades National Park boundaries

Bradenton is a city in Florida, United States. The population was 31,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is named after American Revolutionary War general and captain James Braden, who fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill. The first permanent settler in what would become Bradenton was George Peake in 1824. By 1830 there were over 100 people living in the area. In 1836, a group of 14 men from Georgia arrived and set up shop along Bulls Bayou on what is now Northwest Eighth Street. This initial development led to the nickname "The Venice of the Gulf". In 1849, Captain John Sneath erected a sawmill on Indian River just south of current day Fourth Street NW which became one ofBradenton's most important commercial institutions. In 1861, when America entered into the Civil War as a side issue owing to slavery being legal under Confederate States Of America rules, General William Troup decided to move his artillery batteries from New Orleans to Jacksonville for use against Union forces under General Robert E Lee. He ordered Major Andrew Bradford to build him a house on First Avenue SW., which still stands today as part of Bradford's childhood home . Upon learning about this order he organized an effort with some local citizens including his brother-in-law David Dixon and others to stop Troup from leaving town without proper leave or escort; they successfully delayed Troup for two days before he finally departed via boat bound for Mobile Bay On April 12th 1865 , three days after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth near Ford’s Theatre in Washington D C , Confederate General Beauregard called meeting at 9:00 A M at City Hall….. At this meeting it was decided that all property northward of Vine Street should be seized by Order Of AttorneyGeneral Nathan Bedford Forrest…. As soon as news reached Bradenton that their homes were being confiscated they began moving out…………………………………………………………………………………. On November 3rd 1865 four weeks after President Lincoln had been shot down near Ford’s Theatre Privateer Jno Fisk Pirates captured USS Constitution anchored off shore off mouth of Miami River while VP Lincoln lay dying sixty miles away ( map below) This event helped fuel demand for coastal towns such as Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale so much so that within 2 years Vero Beach had annexed neighboring Sarasota
