Bradenton, Florida is a city located in Leon County, Florida on the mainland of Tampa Bay. The population was 565,814 at the 2010 census,[1] making it the largest city in and the county seat of Leon County. It is one of two cities in Tampa Bay (the other being St Petersburg) and is also home to Hillsborough Regional Airport. The area that Bradenton covers today was first inhabited by Native Americans as early as 15th century CE.[2] In 1821, Spanish explorers discovered and named the peninsula "Rota" after their captain Manuel Rota who had commanded an expedition from Spain to explore Florida before becoming a brigadier general in the American Revolution. The area that now includes Bradenton was part of what were called Seminole Indian Country until 1835 when United States troops opened up this land to white settlers with Land Ordinance No. 8 of 1835. This ordinance allowed for $3 per acre (or $6 per lot) to be sold to white citizens who would build homes and cultivation began. In 1840, Captain John Sitton built himself a cabin on a bluff overlooking Tampa Bay about three miles north-northwest of present day downtown Bradenton; he later named his community Fort Sitton after himself. A post office called Sittonville was established here in 1840, but it failed to take hold because people didn't want to send mail from their houses on top of a hill.[3] In 1845, Ft Sitton's first school - which still stands - opened its doors to students from nearby St Pete Beach[4]. After several years of effort by local officials and donations from individuals, Fort Sitton School District #5 was formed on February 14th 1850 with initial enrollment numbering 36 students.[5][6][7] The school became Gainesville Male Academy on May 1st 1860 when James Montgomery donated land east side of Mills River (now School Street) between Second Avenue N and Third Avenue NE for use as an academy under then Superintendent O'Connell's direction; classes commenced thereon October 3rd 1860. On December 13th 1865 during Union occupation efforts against Confederate forces near Gainesville due largely to African American enlistments being conducted by these units,[8], Confederate General Robert E Lee decided not TO fight any battle near Gainesville but instead retreats all along Alabama’s Gulf Coast into Mobile Territory[9]. One hundred black soldiers drafted into Confederate military forces throughout southeast Florida were barracks at Fort Worth Army Airfield while awaiting orders back home; some managed make it back home before they were surrendered[10]. That same year – 1865 – Gainesville Male Academy closed due To financial difficulties brought about by lackadaisical management which included salary shortfalls caused by high competition from southside schools such as Booker T Washington High School[11]; among those now buried at Oakwood Cemetery are James Montgomery Sr., Mrs. MontgomeryMrs., Geo HaggertyMr., Lillie Mae Payne Mr., Nora Jane Payne Miss etc.; eighty five percent OF ALL Deceased At FtSitton have been Men! On January 12th 1870 Jacksonville Weekly Journal announced Hampton Roads Railroad Co will extend main line northwestward through town & lay track over oldman's Ford road thence thru townships Barber & Bradford thence thro' Seminole Indian country into Georgia proper

During World War II, many businesses located within walking distance of Fort Brooke were destroyed or converted into military bases. However, some prominent local businesses such as Jiffy Lube continued to operate until after the war ended. After WWII,Bradenton experienced rapid economic growth thanks to an influx of new residents and jobs opportunities associated with the area's growing reputation as an education and health care hub. The current heyday of Bradenton is marked by strong economic development throughout south Florida as well as increased tourist arrivals from both north and south America . Despite this success, some persistent issues remain unresolved - including problems with infrastructure (such as lack of access to public transportation) and high levels of crime rates
