A military post was established here in 1832 by General Andrew Jackson with the goal of controlling access to Tampa Bay and its Cocoa Harbor which then lay under Spanish control. As part of the Indian Removal Act of 1830, all Seminoles were removed from their lands within Florida except for those living east of Lake Okeechobee which remained under Spanish control until they were finally expelled in 1898 by Ulysses S. The area now known as Bradenton was first settled by Native Americans in the early 17th century. In 1836, it became part of Tampa Bay Territory and was annexed by Florida in 1839. The city's history goes back to 1795 when Captain George Bradfield established a trading post on what is now US-1 north of downtown Bradenton with his ship "Fenway". For over a century, Bradenton has been an important center for maritime commerce and culture. In 1903–1904, local businessman John P. O'Neill built one of America's first airfields under military control – Hillsborough County Airport – which served as a base for American troops during World War I and World War II. Today, Hillsborough County Airport remains a major employer in the city with more than 100 employees employed there full time plus nearly 20 contractors and suppliers who work at the airport directly or indirectly. In December 1840, Englishman William Farrand purchased land on which he erected a structure called "Fenway House" to house his new colony of settlers from Liverpool England who had journeyed downriver from Newfoundland via Cape Breton Island and then sailed upriver to find their way across Tampa Bay before sailing into Spanish waters off Point Logans instead (the modern day lighthouse). On July 15th 1841 Fenway House fell victim to fire after being accidentally set by someone looking for game nears shore - this led to wider speculation that Hernando De Soto may have landed on Tampa Bay some days earlier! As word spread about this interesting event people from all over came ashore including many famous British names such as Admiral Sir James Cook who donated land adjacent to today's Tarpon Springs Naval Station for HMS Discovery Expedition! After years of development various transportation options were developed including horse drawn wagons that transported goods up Market Street between State Road 54A & US 1 until railroads arrived in earnest starting with the Gulf Railroad Company’s line extending northeast along US 1 through downtown Bradenton on May 25th 1861; service began passenger trains twice daily between Jacksonville & Tampa Junction! Passenger services continued until February 1899 when they were combined with Amtrak’s Key West service! On November 3rd 1907 Mr. Wm Henson organized 125 men from Miami Herald Newspaper Company along with other businessmen west Palm Beach County meet at City Hall annexing Sarasota Co., Fla., An act passed unanimously providing for incorporation Feb 7th 1908 #4362 The Great Depression hit southernFlorida hard beginning around 1932 however most businesses did not fold but rather closed because they could not afford government subsidies like those given Greenlight Developers received during prohibition era . Some closed permanently while others like JCPenney moved production offshore but reopened onceagain after repeal . By 1933 much business activity had stopped due primarily to lack of funding governmental or otherwise . A few exceptions such as restaurants started reopenning but were soon shuttered again due economic conditions throughout much larger section of southFL
