In 1838, Major General Zachary Taylor attacked Fort Brooke near Tampa while retreating from Mexico City during the Mexican–American War. The fortuitous location of Fort Brooke made it an ideal target for attack because it was well defended by artillery batteries and infantry soldiers able to repel any attemptedinvasion by Mexican forces commanded by General Santa Anna. As a result of this attack, over 100 citizens were killed and many others were injured when cannonballs hit their homes or businesses during the Battle ofFort Brooke (now known as Miracle Mile).
