In 1840, Captain John Sledge founded Sledge's Settlement here with his family as an American outpost working along both trade routes between Tampa and Pensacola Bay. Commodore James Ross established USS Enterprise (1840) at nearby Yacht Club Cove before sailing her up Pensacola Bay for Seminole War supplies on December 12th of that year under command of Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter Jr..
