Boynton Beach, Florida is a city located in southern Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was estimated to be over 150,000 as of 2010. It is known for its white sand beaches, tree-lined streets, and interlocking canals that lead to the beach. The city was originally founded by J.P. Boynton and his wife Mabel in 1907 as a small fishing village on the mainland that they named after their parents Boynton and Blandinghurst (the latter being JP's father). The town quickly grew into a thriving community with a population of over 100 people by 1912. In 1924, JP sold the town to developer Averill Harriman for $1 million dollars believing it would become an international tourist destination with world-class hotels and resorts. The Harrimans turned Boynton Beach into one of America's most popular tourism destinations during the 1930s through their Ocean Drive development which included world-renowned restaurants like The Ritz-Carlton and The Brown Derby as well as world-famous golf courses such as Cypress Hills and Seminole Springs. In 1975, after years of neglect from Harriman himself, Boynton Beach reverted back to its original name -JP Boynton City - when he died at age 94 years old. In 1990, Hurricane Andrew destroyed many homes in nearby Jupiter which had madeBoynton Beach one of the hardest hit areas in Florida; however, much rebuilding took place including new CenturyLink Field which seats over 100,000 people and replaced many homes lost in Andrew's wrath including several churches which were completely destroyed or severely damaged (including St John's Episcopal Church just across US 1 from where I am writing this). In 2013/14', Hurricane Irma caused extensive damage to both boynton beach city limits - demolishing entire blocks & shattering windows throughout downtown area; however much has been repaired since then including brand new highways built around central Business District & major thoroughfare accesses leading into outskirts where dozens if not hundreds of properties once stood demolished orLot loss notwithstanding; despite Irma having Catastrophic effects on outermost parts bordering Intraurbane Waterway communities adjacent To Miami Bay
The Boynton Beach area was first settled in the early 1800s. The town was named after Captain John Boynton, who donated land to the community. In 1907, the city of Boynton Beach was organized and became a part of Fort Pierce. On December 17, 1959, the city of Boynton Beach merged with the City of Fort Pierce to form a new municipality.
