Boynton Beach, Florida is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 27,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Boynton Beach is located on Boca Raton's north coast and is bordered by Jupiter to the east, West Palm Beach to the south-southwest, and Fort Myers to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now Boynton Beach were Lieutenant John Stennis and his men who sailed up the Gulf Coast in an expedition under Rear Admiral James K. Polk on October 10–11, 1819. The town began as a small fishing village called "Boca Raton," founded by Augustus Boynton Sr., father of Augustus Boynton Jr., in 1916 when he bought land from Jogging Sands Mineral & Oil Company for $1 million (later worth over $30 million). He named it after his son – Augustus II "Buttons" Boynton III – who had been born in Boca Raton in 1892 and died there two years earlier at age 26 during World War I. In 1922 Buttons' widow donated 826 acres (291 hectares) of undeveloped land near today's intersection of US 1/SR 441 (the Turnpike) and SR 524 (the current street grid), which became known as Boys Town because so many boys from nearby Fort Myers were helping out with planting trees on the new lands. After Buttons death four years later, his widow dedicated that tract especially for Boys Town development; it remains one of its most important properties today. A post office was established at Boca Raton in 1918; it moved to its present location in 1923. The name changed again – this time to "Boynton Beach" – when incorporated into Palm Beach County on December 15, 1925 (). The first mayor was Harry Giannini; he served three terms before being replaced by Edmond Weitzel in 1951due to term limits set forth by then-County Commissioner Marcus Wertheimer (). City council meetings took place at various locations until 1974 when purpose-built Council Chambers were built downtown on Constitution Avenue across from county courthouse. In 1978 all municipal departments were consolidated into newly created City Hall which still serves as our municipally owned hall.-On May 3rd 1990 residents voted not only against annexing neighbouring South Kendall but also against ceding any authority or jurisdiction thereto should that annexation occur.–City Manager Frank Sotto resigned effective June 30th 1991 due largely to differences with Mayor Joe Vitale about how much authority City Hall should have over non-municipal matters such as zoning etc.–On November 3rd 1992 Mayor Vitale approved annexing South Kendall pursuant to a citizens' referendum held just days earlier! It has since become one of America’s fastest growing towns with nearly twice the population growth rate recorded anywhere else within state or national borders! Boynton Beach, Florida was founded by George Boynton in 1922. The community is located on the Gulf of Mexico, just south of Miami and east of St. Petersburg. Boynton Beach quickly became known for its sandy beaches, warm weather, and affluent population. In recent years, the community has become a popular tourist spot for families and retirees alike. The town was originally named after Boynton's brother-in-law and business partner, A.C. "Butch" Hokesfeldt. The name change came about because at first people thought it was pronounced "BOY-nant." When he met Butch Hokesfeldt in 1922, Boynton knew that this would be the perfect location for him to do just that. The two men built a small house on US 1A midway between Fort Myers Beach and Clearwater beach (now part of Panama City). From their home, they watched as the area around them grew into what is now Boynton Beach – an vibrant community with rich history dating back over 100 years! In 1935, George Boynton donated land within the town limits to build Palm Island State Park – one of North America’s first state park systems! Today, Palm Island remains one ofBoyton Beachers most popular attractions with visitors coming from all over Florida to enjoy its beautiful beaches and stunning wildlife! It wasn't long before other businesses followed suit: In 1935, The American Legion opened its first store in town; four years later Wurlitzer Instruments leased space from Mr. Hokefeldt; then Joe’s Pizza opened up in 1938; finally Dr Pepper Bottling Co., Incorporated leased space from Mr. Hokefeldt in 1940! Each new business brought new life to what had been primarily aresidential area – something that continues today! Today, much like when it began -Boynton Beach is a vibrant community full of families enjoying quality time together while living close to some amazing amenities!
