The city was founded on December 12, 1903 by Captain Gifford Boynton and his wife Anna Moody Boynton. The first post office in town was established on November 16, 1903 under the name "Boynton". On January 1, 1907, it changed its name to "Boynton Beach" after Captain Gifford Boynton's family home in that town. In 1911 the City Council approved a resolution to change the name to "Bourbonnais Heights", but this proposal was not accepted by the citizens and eventually reverted back to "Bourbonnais Heights". In 1928 two development companies were formed: The Boysons Corporation and The Ponds Company. These companies built a number of homes in what is now downtown Boynton Beach. Development continued until World War II when most of downtown business stopped because so many people who lived there were drafted into military service or away during war-time rationing which affected almost all businesses within walking distance of Soldier's Field (now known as Sun Life Stadium). During World War II some Dunkin' Donuts stores opened up along State Road 7A south of Interstate 95 near today's Boulevard des Arts shopping center which served as an important stop for soldiers on their way home from battlefronts all over Europe and North Africa; these restaurants are still open today as Dunkin' Donuts locations throughout South Florida including Boynton beach! Today much of downtown Boynton Beach remains residential with many small businesses remaining unchanged from pre-war days while several large coffee shops have replaced smaller mom-and-pop operations since then - including Starbucks! Downtown also features several IMAX cinemas which provide interesting glimpses into local history (e.g., Hurricane Andrew destroyed a local power plant that had been used as an airbase during WWII). Some notable landmarks located in or around Downtown include: civic building at corner Of US 97/4th Ave & Metropole Blvd; Art Deco courthouse (1928) just east of 4th Ave.; First Presbyterian Church (1898) across from Courthouse Annex; Waugh Chapel Schoolhouse (1912) between Metropole Blvd & US 97/4th Ave.; Eudora Welty Home museum located behind American Legion hall on 4th Ave.; Good Shepherd CatholicChurch located off Metropole Blvd.- One can also find various souvenir shops scattered throughout town if looking for something specific such as Miami Dolphins memorabilia etc... although I cannot speak for everyone! In 1951, it became an incorporated city with a population of over 100,000 people and today is one of the most populous cities in southwestern Florida with over 2 million residents. The city was named after J.M. Boynton's father-in-law, Commodore Walter Egan Boynton who had served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Miami-Dade County from 1865 to 1887 and later served as U.S Secretary of War under President Grant from 1879 to 1883.
