It is located on Miami-Dade County's southern border and is bordered by Palm Beach County to the north and east, Broward County to the south and west, and Lee County to the northwest. Boynton Beach has been inhabited for more than 10,000 years. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Boynton Beach in 1836. The city was incorporated as a town on February 14, 1912. The name "Boynton" came from Jethro Boynton who purchased land in what is now Boynton Beach from Aulius Barnhill in 1837. The area that now makes up Boynton Beach was originally part of Palm City until 1894 when it seceded from Palm City to form its own municipality under the name of "Lake Worth". In 1916, Lake Worth merged with neighboring Plantation Park into one new municipality called "Boynton". On July 1, 1922, all of Broward County became an official county with its own government while still remaining part of Palm City so that Boynton beach would have its own police force and fire department as well as having its own post office which continued until 1956 when it merged with Coconut Creek post office. In 1956, due to dwindling postal revenues and population growth throughout South Florida combined with cheaper mailing rates for rural residents within Broward and Palm counties (the USPS refused to lower prices for rural mailers), boynton beach annexed much of Marco Island including Fort Myers making it one of only two cities in South Florida to annex territory outside their original city limits- along with Jupiter which did so in 1959 while Manatee Springs annexation took place in 1984 followed by Apalachicola Bayonne absorption in 1991 before finally Daytona later that year creating today's current boundaries totaling 27 municipalities across South Florida consisting of over 120 ZIP Codes
