By 1961, when it became clear that Fort Lauderdale would become an international port rather than just a military base,[4] Boynton Beach had grown into one of South Florida's most vibrant communities with over 100 businesses and more than 350 residents;[5] however annexation of much of neighboring unincorporated territory followed through until 1975 when all but 1 square mile (0.6 km²) of Parkland came under jurisdiction of Broward County.[6] The 1990s saw rapid growth due to heavy investment from developers who desired access to South Miami's famed seashorefront properties which are home to world-renowned resorts such as Four Seasons Resort south beach and Trump International Golf Links & Spa President George Bush Intercontinental golf course; also located within walking distance are numerous small businesses including several banks as well as high end stores like Macy’s department store chain and Saks Fifth Avenue flagship store before crossing the street into Overtown neighborhood east of downtown where many Cuban refugees settled beginning in the early 1960s following Fidel Castro’s overthrow of Fulgencio Batista’s rule in Cuba which led to open hostility between Miami Cubans living there and their American counterparts - leading some later incidents such as “the shantytown incident” that resulted in physical confrontations between groups members
