In 1932, Mrs. Flournoy donated land for a daycare center on NW Fourth Street which became known as Babyland operated by Mrs. Emilie Weigel from 1933 until her death in 1984. In 1967, Robert Moses proposed that Pinellas County annex Bonita Springs into its jurisdiction but this proposal was not accepted because it would have increased tax rates on residents of the annexed town while maintaining separate government services and transportation systems for residents of both communities
Bonita Springs was founded on December 12, 1892 by citrus fruit grower F.O. Bogue and his wife Anna Belle Bogue. The town was named for the Spanish word "bonita" meaning "Beautiful." The original population of Bonita Springs was only 100 people, but it rapidly grew to 1,500 in a little over a decade. By 1907, the town had its own post office and incorporated as a village. In 1912, the town adopted its first Municipal Code and began to build its first public buildings including the Bonita Springs City Hall and Fire Department Station No. 2. In 1937, the city annexed adjacent Spring Hill Village which had been growing rapidly since 1902 as a result of land sales made by Anna Belle Bogue's father-in-law Jules Forbes Carver. During World War II, Bonita Springs became an important military base as it served as both an airfield and munitions storage facility. After the war ended in 1945, Bonita Springs experienced rapid growth as a result of new development in the area such as shopping malls and hotels that sprang up throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Today, Bonita Springs is home to more than 30 thousand people who live within its limits with an economy that is based largely on agricultural production
