Bonita Springs, Florida is a town located in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name comes from Spanish meaning "happy bay". The first Europeans to visit what is now Bonita Springs were Andrew Johnson and James K. Polk in 1824 as they made their way through Central America on their ill-fated Yucatan Expedition. They named the spot "Chiavari" after José Chiavarra, an early settler who established himself there in 1828. After the American Revolution, Spain ceded Florida to the United States and Mexico claimed it as part of their new territory; this led to all sorts of disputes over who owned what land in Southwest Florida until finally US natural resources won out over Mexican claims in 1888 when Congress passed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ceded all but about 2 percent of Southwest Florida (including Bonita Springs) to US control. In 1892 developer John Pemberton bought some 4,000 acres (1 km²) around Chiavari for $2 per acre from Manuel Miranda y Valdez and started building homes on them known as the Pemberton Rancho Modelo Estate development. The town's first store opened its doors September 10th 1886 by J.W Marsh & Son behind present day Courthouse Square on Fort Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue North - billing itself as "The Birthplace of Useless Things" because nothing could be sold at that time other than necessities such as flour, water and meat supplies for cattle().
