Bonita Springs was founded in 1902 by Mrs. Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The post office was established in 1903 and the first Baptist church was built in 1904. The city was incorporated in 1907.
Bonita Springs is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 17,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name "Bonita" comes from Spanish meaning "beautiful." The town was founded in 1892 by James Peele and his family, who named it after their daughter Bonita. The first post office was established in 1893. In 1916, the name of the town was changed to Bonita Springs after Mrs. Florence Swenson (1883-1962), the founder and first woman mayor of Miami-Dade County. Mrs. Swenson donated land for a public park that still stands today on Main Street in Bonita Springs. In 1984, Bonita Springs became an independently incorporated city with its own police department and fire department as well as its own budget and City Council meetings which are open to the public! Since then, Bonita Springs has seen some impressive growth including new schools, businesses, homes and more! In 2016, Mayor Martinez announced they had received $8 million dollars from unidentified donors to help finance several new projects such as a new library/community center/arts center complex; a major renovation of existing high school; and construction of two brand new elementary schools - one for children K-5th grade and one for grades 6-8th!
