Bonita Springs is a small town located in Orange County, Florida. The population was 8,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Spanish colonists in 1892 and named for Punta Bonita, an island in the Gulf of Mexico. The original settlers were retirees who bought land near what is now Bonita Springs Boulevard and Hillsborough Drive to retire on. In 1906, the city of Fort Myers annexed Bonita Springs and it became a part of that city until 1959 when it again became a part of Orange County. The community has experienced several waves of growth over the years, including during World War II when many military personnel lived and worked here; during the 1960s when lots were sold for $1 per acre; during the 1980s when businesses opened up including a casino; and most recently through economic development with new housing developments being built as well as an increase in retail activity. One prominent business owner who has beenave around Bonita Springs for many years is Dr. James Dutton III who co-founded JDS Health Care with his wife Beverly Dutton in 1984. The first humans to live in present day Bonita Springs were speakers of the Acheulian language and their descendants, who arrived there around 3000 BC. In 1897 local lumberman Hernando De Soto discovered oil while exploring phosphate beds along his south-centralFlorida route. American Petroleum Company drilled a wellknown as "DeSoto" on November 3, 1901 and production began eleven days later; it continued until 1907 when gasification ceased due to lack of natural gas resources. In 1915 Captain James Wickersham founded Jacksonville's first naval air station at Fort Myers Beach on Clearwater Bayou near present day Bonita Springs and named it Naval Air Station (later Naval Air Station Miramar) in honor of Rear Admiral James Wickersham (1877-1948). On December 10, 1941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor with an attack aircraft from Japanese fighter squadron No. 615 which destroyed two US Navy patrol planes at NAS Miramar killing all nine pilots on board and damaged three others severely enough for them to be turned back by RAF Fighter Command before completing their trip over land into Hawaii; this event is known as the Battle of Miramar or "the Silenced Years". Japanese forces occupy NAS Miramar during World War II but never use it because they lacked fuel for their bombers which required airspace over Pearl Harbor On October 15th 1959 Hurricane Andrew slammed into Everglades National Park causing extensive damage including loss of life within minutes when roofs off homes collapsed onto people inside as they slept; $1 billion was spent on repairs and restoration over fifteen years It wasn't until 1978 that Charles & Lillian DeVault opened up Anheuser Busch Brewery's original brewery buildings located just east of downtown off US Highway 83 - now called Beer Hall Place - after purchasing an old store building across from St Augustine beach front market place where they had been working out of leased space since 1954 beer wasproduced here until 1984 when Anheuser Busch Corporate Headquarters moved to downtown Tampa . Today many aspects associated with baseball such as dugouts, stadiums etc are still standing today thanks to several expansions and renovations both outside & inside Anheuser Busch Brewery
