Bonita Springs is a small town in central Florida. It is located on the Indian River, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of Jacksonville and 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Tampa. The population was 12,316 at the 2000 census. The area that now makes up Bonita Springs was first settled by Seminole Indians in the 18th century. A post office was established here in 1875, and a depot served the community until 1915. In 1925, the name of the town was changed to honor Mrs. Anna Hargrave Bonnington, who had donated land for its construction. The town has experienced several expansions since then, including a second round of development in the early 1990s and an increase in business activity since 2000 due to new developments adjacent to Highway 192. Bonita Springs is a city located in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 107,887 at the 2010 census. The name comes from Spanish meaning "beautiful bay" and refers to the natural harbor on which the community was founded. Bonita Springs is bordered by Jupiter to the east, Boca Raton to the west, Boynton Beach to the north and West Palm Beach to the south. The first settlers in what would become Bonita Springs were local fishermen who came ashore from their vessels along "Spanish Bay" on November 4, 1894. They named their town after Gertrude Atherton, wife of Rear Admiral John Hargrave Atherton of HMS "Euryalus". In 1915 developer Asa Prentice opened an amusement park called Velma Park that became one of North America's largest theme parks. He also built two smaller amusement parks called Riverside and Sunrise Gardens before selling them all in 1929. In 1933 he built a new facility that became home to then-Florida State University (FSU) and remains its main campus today. The popularity of FSU led Toombs Air Force Base owner Lieutenant General James Forrest II (1892-1974) and his son General James Forrest III (1917-1999) to purchase land adjacent to FSU for what would become Bonita Springs Racetrack & Casino on October 20, 1957. The general announced that construction upon completion of racetracks across Florida could begin as early as 1958 with speeds up from 100 mph (160 km/h). On February 9th 1959 Governor Lawton Chiles proclaimed that Bonita Springs Racetrack & Casino had been dedicated “to provide gambling opportunities for all people who may desire them” making it one of only two racetracks in Florida open 24/7 for casino games purposes at that time! The other was Daytona International Speedway where race betting began on October 1st 1959 concurrent with opening day at Daytona USA! At $5 per lap racing became legal throughout most of America within just a few short years following enactment! In order not compete head-on against New York City’s Flamingo Hotel Race Course they offered similar game play without admission prices starting at $3/$6 during weekdays while weekend rates increased tenfold! This resulted in over 2 million patrons visiting this fledgling resort annually by 1962 including many Hollywood celebrities such as Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis who regularly patronized its many bars and nightclubs along with world renowned athletes like Jesse Owens and Jackie Robinson!. Unfortunately due mainly à economic factors such as a lack of competition bonitaspringsracetrack&casino failed within just 15 years becoming relegated primarily as an entertainment district rather than offering professional sporting events or educational experiences like other well known tourist destinations like Las Vegas or Miami Beach . However recent developments have once again brought much hope for restoration given their current location within walking distance both from downtown palm beach county proper as well as numerous cultural attractions surrounding it!
