Bonita Springs is an unincorporated community in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Intracoastal Waterway. The area that is now Bonita Springs was first settled by farmers in 1884. A post office called "Bonita" was established in 1888, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1902, a group of citrus growers founded the Bonita Springs Citrus Growers Cooperative and named their new town after themselves, Bonita Springs being one of the original members. In 1930, developers bought all of Collier County from its landowners and laid out a plan to build a large city on what would become Bonita Springs. However, this idea was abandoned because of opposition from local residents who saw it as an intrusion into their rural way of life. The last major development took place in 1984 when the Intracoastal Waterway channel was dredged to create more open space for shipping near downtown Bonita Springs. It wasn't until 1990 when plans finally emerged to bring a casino to Bonita Springs – however no action ever took place due to lack of interest from commercial operators or lawmakers who were worried about how such a venture could be financed without arousing too much suspicion among locals about why big business wanted to move into such an small town. In recent years there has been renewed discussion around developing the land surrounding downtown Bonitasprings as an urban center which could house businesses and residencespaces including a hotel and conference center as well as retail spaces like restaurants and shops catering specifically to tourists visiting nearby Fort Myers or Naples respectively. There are also talks being floated around redeveloping some properties adjacent to Interstate 95 (I-95) which forms part of the city boundaries but remain unused as of yet due primarily because they are considered too far away from any significant population centers or amenities
