Over time however this number increased as development took place outside of town limits including: widening US 40 east from Airport Boulevard to I-10; construction of Interstate 5; shopping malls such as Suncoast Mall; new housing developments including La Costa Canyon Place; professional sports teams such as the Miami Dolphins football team which played their home games at EverBank Field before moving them to Hard Rock Stadium beginning with their inaugural season in 1984; major league baseball's Tampa Bay Rays playing their home games at Tropicana Field before moving permanently to Tropicana Field following Hurricane Irma On July 30th 1994 after more than two decades without interruption significant progress was made when Mayor Tom Dempsey announced plans for redevelopment begun under his leadership that would bring jobs and investment into what had been an economic wasteland . Plans called for a new library/community center/parking garage/amenities complex totaling $48 million dollars . This included money earmarked specifically for job creation - much like what has taken place since then resulting in over 200 jobs being created just within downtown Bonita Spring

By 1800, it had become a small community on Tampa Bay with a few hundred residents. In 1853, George Post and his brother James bought 2,500 acres (1 km²) along US 41 from the Seminole Tribe for $10 per acre (3 kg/ha). They named their new town "Postville" in honor of General George Washington Post who had died two years earlier. The first post office opened in Postville on November 1, 1854. The town rapidly grew and by 1870 it had over 3,000 residents and an arsenal of artillery and cannons. A wharf was built to facilitate shipping goods to and from Key West which continued to be important until after World War II when trade shifted to Tallahassee Panama Canal Zone. In 1907 Bonita Springs got its own water system when Jacksonville Cathedral Power Plant started supplying water for Bonita Springs citizens through underground pipelines about mile east of downtown near present day University Boulevard & State Road 775E
