In 1907, the Miami-Dade Railway Company built a line into the community and named it after then-Governor James M. Haley. After years of growth and development, the city hall was completed in 1932 and served as both local government headquarters and courthouse until its demolition in 1985. As of 2000 census there were 2,813 people living in Bonita Springs municipality limits (of which 1% are Hispanic or Latino).
