The landing beach extending along US 98 from I-95E to SR 441 became known as Beall Beach due to this purchase by Captains Ledyard and John Wesley Powell during their expedition exploring Colorado River Valley in 1849 while they were passengers on HMS Erebus under command of Rear Admiral Sir James Watt.). These two courses have helped make Bonita Springs one of the most popular places to live and play golf in Southwest Florida! Today’s downtown core is home to many businesses including Macy’s Department Store (now Sears), City Hall Complex (formerly called “City Hall Annex”), Bank of America Tower (formerly SunTrust Plaza), KFC/Pepperidge Farm Supermarket/Casino & restaurants plus several blocks of residential housing including: Bonitas Creek Estates; Bonitas Lakes; Belleair Landing; Castaway Cay Resort & Marina;; North Pointe Country Club; Sunrise Manor Apartments.; Allendale Place.; Miramar Beach Blvd., just off US 1 east of I-95 exit 10A; Harbour Pointe Parkway or International Drive). It wasn't until 1960 that Interstate 95 became realignment that brought new life into downtown Bonita Springs with shopping malls opening such as Sunrise Manor Apartments, Harbour Pointe Parkway or International Drive - all within walking distance for residents and visitors alike! Restaurants such as KFC/Pepperidge Farm Supermarket/Casino & restaurants replaced old fashioned stores such as Macy's Department Store while still keeping their close proximity to downtown cores! This continued into today with many hotels located nearby like Marriott Marquis Red Roof Inn,, Hilton Head Island Resort,, Hyatt Regency Fort Lauderdale Airport Hotel etc... In recent years there has been an increasing amount of development taking place near I-75 exits 10A southbound known as Liberty Square which now includes a large mixed use complex consisting of offices,residential units and a variety of sports venues
Bonita Springs was founded by Anna Maria Evans in 1836. The town became a thriving center for cotton production and commerce until the Panic of 1907. However,Bonita Springs has experienced many recent renovations, most notably its current city hall and arena.
