In 1916, developers Charles Ladd and Harry Bemis purchased 1,100 acres (500 ha) of undeveloped agricultural land near Bonita Springs and began developing it into what would become one of Central Florida's largest citrus industries. In 1922 they named their company Ladd-Bemis Citrus Company Ltd., which served as the nucleus of their later empire that included more than 200 citrus companies nationwide. The Ladd-Bemis brothers also built two large shopping malls: one on I-4 east of downtown Tampa and another off US Highway 27 northwest of downtown Bonita Springs

In 1912, the population of Bonita Springs reached 2,500 people. In 1916, a new park was developed in downtown Bonita Springs and became known as "The Park." During World War II, the city served as a military base for the U.S. Army Air Forces. The area now known as Downtown Bonita Springs was heavily bombed during World War II and has numerous reminders of that time including a set of reconstructed air-raid Tower ruins located on Depot Street near Third Street NW., which are open to the public every day from 9am to 4pm beginning Memorial Day until Labor Day; and an Americana museum called "The Fort" located at 269 Ebono Ave., whichopened in 1976 and features artifacts from various periods in local history including pre- Seminole Indian days through present day with exhibits on Native American culture and customs.
