This project failed due to funding problems but it did provide employment for many locals during the early years of development in Belle Glade. In 1912 BelleGladeriverged into full city status when it annexed neighboring towns Strackemmanville, Mims, Winter Haven and unincorporated parts of Polk County totaling about 12 square miles (). Today most residents still refer to themselves simply as “BelleGladesiders” or “Orlandoians” although there are numerous professional organizations that are also headquartered here such as Chamber of Commerce (), United Way (), etc.). The original downtown district that surrounded Railroad Station Square underwent some major renovations during the late 1990s/early 2000s which included new sidewalks, streetlights and landscaping; this renovation added much needed life to an otherwise aging district which had been overall losing interest over time according to Mayor Donny Hathaway (). In 2006 plans were submitted for another downtown renovation which would have seen extensive upgrades to both public transportation options as well as business districts located around the intersection of Royal Palm Boulevard/State Road 16A / US 1 & I-4 .
