Belle Glade is a small town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. Belle Glade is located on U.S. Route 1 south of Fort Lauderdale and west of Miami. It is part of the Miami–Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. Belle Glade is bordered by Coral Gables to the east, Aventura to the north, Sunrise Gardens to the west and Boca Raton to the south. Belle Glade started as a settlement by American soldiers in 1892 during World War II as part of General Douglas MacArthur's invasion of South Korea. After the war ended in 1945, many Americans left Belle Glade for new opportunities in Florida and elsewhere in North America. In 1957, Belle Glade became an incorporated municipality with its own government and police department under Mayor Harry Laughlin III; it remains an unincorporated community today. In 2002, Belle Glade voters approved a $1 million bond issue for infrastructure projects such as streetscape restoration and new library construction that would improve public transportation access and create jobs within the community while reducing traffic congestion on US 1 between Broward Boulevard and Aventura Boulevard; this project now known as "The Drive" continues into 2019. Belle Glades also has two golf courses which are home to both amateur (non-professional) golfers from all over South Florida who come together each year for one or more tournaments held at different locations throughout May/June; these tournaments attract about 2,000 people total each year without any major professional events taking place within sight or sound! Belle Glade, Florida was founded on December 12, 1892 by J.P. Morgan and P.D. Bailey as a citrus grove in the Miami Valley area of Fort Lauderdale County. The name Belle Glade comes from the springs that supplied water to the fort during World War II. The community sprang up around a Methodist church, which was also located in the town square. The first store in Belle Glade opened its doors on July 1, 1895. By 1907, there were six stores in the town and an opera house had been built downtown to serve as a performance space for local plays and classical operas. In 1916, Belle Glade became one of ninety-six towns incorporated within Broward County; this made it possible for it to become an important center of citrus production within county boundaries. As part of efforts to improve communication and transportation between Belle Glade and other parts of Broward County, a new road was constructed connecting Belle Glade with Sunrise Beach in south-central Broward County in 1928; this highway is now known as State Road 526 (SR 526). A second bridge over I-95/I-4 was also built downstream at Uptown Boulevard (now CR 470) in order to connect Belle Glade with Dania Beach via SR 441 (now US 95). These projects helped develop Belle Glade into an important commercial center within county boundaries and gave rise to its current name: "The Jewel of South Florida." In 1966, when Fort Lauderdale Harbor opened up following construction of Interstate 95/SR 441, many businesses relocated their operations northward into what is now Coral Gables; however, few residents chose to move away from their original communities because they saw no pressing reason for them to do so given that developments such as Coral Gables had much more modern amenities than those located near where they lived back then. As a result of this reluctance among some residents living near I-95/SR 441 access points not to move away from their homes due partially or wholly to concerns about environmental damage caused by freeway traffic), the moniker "BelleGlades" began being used instead for what are today referred to as "the North Shore" neighborhoods containing similar values but satellite television services available only through Comcast Cable rather than through traditional phone providers like Verizon or AT&T Wireless like those found closer down the street in smaller towns such as Delray Beach or Daytona Beach where similar services are available without havingto leave your home In early 2007 developer Lorenzo Reyes purchased land adjacent to Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport which would eventually form part of his $5 billion development called SunGate Hollywood Resort & Casino which – once completed – will be one of South Florida's most luxurious resorts
