Belle Glade is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. Belle Glade is located on the right bank of the Jupiter River, east of Coral Gables and west of Sun City Center. It is bordered to the south by Sunrise Boulevard and to the north by Northwest corner of Riviera Drive and Belle Glade Boulevard (U.S. 192). The name "Belle Glade" comes from two plantation owners who purchased land there: Belle Airer from Augustus Busch in 1907 and Adolphus Busch from his father Frederick Busch in 1911. At that time it was one of six townships within Palm Beach County organized as part of a new county government on November 3, 1906 under Governor John Wainwright. In 1914, when Belle Airer passed away, her son Walter took over management of her estate which included about 84% of all remaining undeveloped land within Palm Beach County.. He developed much of what now makes up Belle Glade into an upscale community with large homes since he had more money than many other landowners at that time.. In 1949, when Walt Disney bought most all shares in American Broadcasting Company (ABC), he sold approximately 400 acres including some that made up Belle Glade to ABC for $5 million.. After his death in 1966, ownership reverted back to Walter's widow Anna with some restrictions being placed on development until further NOTICE FROM THE COUNTY BOARD OF MANAGEMENT AS TO WHAT APPEARS TO BE BELLE GLADE'S INTENDED USE AND ZONING BY ADDITION OF NEW LAND DISTRIBUTION MATTERS RELATING TO THAT PARTICIPATION IN THE SHARES OWNED BY WALT DISNEY COMPANY . Anna continued to manage operations until 1985 when she sold it back to Walter's widow Anna with additional restrictions still in place . Today, much remains unchanged from those days including remnants of Walt Disney's beloved clock factory which still manufactures watches today outside their gates!
