According to local legend , members of Captain James Cook's exploration party were anchored off shore near present day North Park Drive when they sighted land that would become Miami-Dade County on July 4th 1795 while exploring along Florida's Gulf coast . The Spanish name given to this area by European explorers - Jacaranda - likely refers to an ancient palm tree or willow tree that still stands today near Northeast Seventh Avenue corner Northeast Tenth Street . A deed recorded November 15th 1794 shows Carlos de Menendez y Costilla purchased 781 acres east side of Broward Boulevard from Alonso Gomez de la Torre for $600 .....
