The history of Belle Glade goes back even further than its current form; it has been mentioned extensively throughout history as one of America's earliest planned towns – first proposed by then-Governor Andrew Jackson during his 1800s presidency as part of his overall plan to improve transportation connections between Tampa Bayou west of Jacksonville and Mobile Bayou east of Pensacola – but never realized due to legal challenges mounted by former Governor Manuel López de la Portilla (1811–1875).
