Belle Glade is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. It was founded in 1892 by J.P. Morgan and his associates as a small town on the southern edge of present-day Belle Glade. The population was 33,752 at the 2010 census. The name "Belle Glade" comes from Spanish for "beautiful grove". Theodore Roosevelt visited Belle Glade in 1907 and 1908 while he was campaigning for president and reported that it was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. In 1912 President Woodrow Wilson made a speech at the Belle Glade Hotel in which he endorsed annexation of Belle Glade by Miami Beach to make way for more development in that area. Belle Glade became an incorporated city on November 7, 1916 with Aida Morrison as its first mayor. The following year, Miami Beach annexed Belle Glade as part of their annexation plan; however, they never built any buildings within the city limits because they were prohibited by state law from annexing municipalities without voter approval. In 1940, developer Joseph Pasternak bought land east of present day Belleglades Boulevard and planned to build an artificial lake called Ocean Reef which would have been home to luxury hotels, golf courses, and other tourist attractions such as a water park and aquariums; however this project collapsed due to World War II shortages of materials such as steel and concrete.
