Belle Glade is located on U.S. Route 1 about twenty miles east of Jacksonville and seventy-five miles west of Miami Beach. It was founded in 1892 by J.P. Morgan and his brother Harry as a summer home for themselves and their families when they were executives with the Central Pacific Railroad.[1] In 1889, Jepson donated 7 acres (2 ha) of land to Belle Glade Township for public use as a park.[2] In 1902, Belle Glade became a city after becoming one of two townships inDuval County[3][4] and annexed by Jacksonville on November 3, 1903,[5] becoming one of Duval's eighteen municipalities; it was later designated an official county town on October 15, 1907.[6][7][8] The name "Belle Glade" comes from Belle Isle which served as the original site for what would become Belle Glade Park; however local citizens objected to this name because it sounded like something from Europe rather than America[9][10]. The present day spelling "BelleGlade" was approved by voters in a referendum on November 6th, 2004; the change took effect that same day,[11][12] though some residents continue to use the old spelling out loud without getting consensus from government officials or other community members who may have knowledge about both spellings. The economy of Belle Glade depends heavily upon tourism which has been increasing since 2000 despite costlier items such as Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans less than two months earlier that year). After World War II ended, the town's popularity grew due to the addition of new shopping centers such as Billionaire's Place Shopping Center and Twilight Zone Shopping Center which were located just south of BelleGlade along Sunrise Highway. Additionally, the town also saw an increase in development due to its location close to Interstate 95 and other highways。 In 1984, then-Mayor Bob Orr announced that he would be closing down most of the original shopping center in order focus on developing new businesses within the town limits instead of expanding into neighboring towns like Coral Springs or Lake Worth however this decision reversed two years later whenOrr decided that most of these new businesses were not really doing much good inside BelleGlade while some were actually hurting local businesses). In 2006, voters approved a resolution calling for annexation by Fort Lauderdale which at first appeared difficult given that no one had ever proposed annexing BelleGlades territory before but following negotiations it was realized that both cities have similar demographics (Belle Gladelians are more likely than Fort Lauderdale residents to be Hispanic) so annexation would likely result in less crime rates within Bellegrade while also creating jobs for locals during construction phase). However once final plans were drawn up there seemed little chance that anything could happen since Fort Lauderdale has been trying unsuccessfully for years now to get control over Everglades National Park which includes parts of what is now BelleglADE
