Bartow has been inhabited by Native American groups for centuries and was known as "the landing place for Seminole Indians." The town's first post office was established in 1827 and it became an incorporated municipality in 1902. The name came from colonel James A. BartOW who donated land to build an airport near present day Bartow Municipal Airport on which he built a home and used it as his headquarters during World War I when he served as Commandant General of Camp Bearden military base nearby; today the airport property includes a museum dedicated to him called "James A George Museum". In 1929, Charles Ewing bought 3200 acres east of present day downtown BartOW from John Suesse for $1 million dollars (now valued at $40 million). Whence began construction on what would become one of America's largest shopping malls - Encore Center? Encore Center opened its doors on November 12th 2001 with more than 120 stores including Macy's and JCPenney among others anchors inside an 8-acre mall with over 50 restaurants - making it one of the most comprehensive mixed use developments ever created within Polk County limits! This decision came after video footage emerged showing officers pulling out their weapons and deploying tasers at peaceful protesters without any provocation

Bartow was founded in 1892 by John Bartow and his wife Anna Maria. The original post office was called "Emmetsburg". In 1903 the post office moved to its present location and changed its name to "Bartow". In 1916 Bartow became the county seat of Polk County. The United States Coast Guard station at Bartow Island (now known as Fort Myers Marina) was activated on December 14, 1941 and served until it closed on September 30, 1946. The Coast Guard Station operated radar equipment that detected Japanese submarines during World War II.
