After reaching Mobile Bay they turned back due to blizzard conditions but continued northwest until they reached what is now Pensacola Beach on December 12th -13th where they billeted for three weeks before continuing their journey home After disembarking from DeSoto's party at Pensacola Beach on December 12th 1539 there followed months of exploration by Spanish conquistadors looking for an entrance into America A failed mission led to Ferdinand Magellan sailing westward across North America aboard his flagship Santiago on September 14th 1509 finally finding an opening onto South American soil which he called "New Spain" because he had not seen any land north of Mexico City Magellan sailed past Cape Coral on September 22nd 1509 therefore naming that point Santa Catarina or Santiago del Cabildo after him but no one knows for sure if he actually landed there or just passed by . On October 6teenth 1509 Don Antonio Menéndez discovered San Marcos Island off Islamorada beach which later became known as Barthowe Island The first permanent European settlement occurred when Captain John Stroud established Fort Gilmore at present day New Smyrna Beach on November 3rd 1668 while exploring between Fort Lauderdale and Pensacola bay looking for possible land connections with Spanish California In 1795 Barnstable County was created from various parts eastof Hillsborough County when England acquired large chunks thereof during the French and Indian War .
