Bartow, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Lakeland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1887 by J.M. Bartow and his brother John Bartow Sr., as an agricultural village on a bend in the Stono River near what is now Gainesville. The name "Bartow" comes from a Creek word meaning "a well." In 1902, J.M.'s father bought 7 acres (2 ha) of land east of town for $1000 and started to build a house on it which became the first home in Bartow. In 1903 he also started to plant corn and cotton on his land which eventually produced over 100 bushels (4 metric tons) of crops each year for sale in town and outlying areas. On November 10, 1907 Linnie Dent married J.M.'s brother John Bartow Jr., son of their parents' second marriage; they had met during their childhood years when both were working at their father's store in nearby Jacksonville as clerks while their parents took care of the family farmstead between Jacksonville and Sanford (then Mission Viejo). They moved into their first home together just south of present-day downtown Bartow that December 8th after purchasing adjoining property from Jno Easley for $175 per acre (approximate value then). On December 15th 1905 their first child was born: Anna Sophia BartOWn (born October 26th 1906). The couple raised four kids until 1925 when Anna Augusta died due to Stillbirth - still an event that truly rocked the community as few knew how to handle such tragedies back then! On New Year's Day 1927 Anna Augusta followed her mother into death following childbirth at age 47yrs old...the youngest daughter to ever die by natural causes! One wonders if today some kind of memorial or remembrance would be created/programmed about this lamented tragedy? That’s something for future generations to ponder! Another question mark looms large with respect to one particular death mentioned earlier - did this infant girl actually die from pneumonia contracted during delivery or did she succumb posthumously due another medical emergency unrelated to birth complications? We may never know for sure...or maybe we do too because information available today allows us only glimpses into what happened during those dark days long ago...? Anyway enough reminiscing - back onto topic... In 1924 Mr Fenton purchased 3 more acres adjacent east of Mrs Dent's house expanding our holdings up 4 lots yielding 16 lots total including today's downtown area! By 1930 there were over 150 people living around here & yes folks had water rights too!! Today most all businesses are either government entities or commercial entities!!! From humble beginnings bartowe gained its current moniker “The City Of Lakeshore” thanks largely theretofore largesse bestowed upon it thru numerous civic events & philanthropic endeavors spearheaded by Mayor Carroll Baldwin who continue’s support through donations even unto this day!!
