Bartow is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Bartow was founded in 1892 by J.F. Bartow and his family as a logging community on Hwy. 460 west of downtown Jacksonville. In 1907, Bartow and other leaders of Jacksonville decided to create their own city and incorporated as Jacksonville on December 12 of that year. In 1912, the name of the town was changed to Bartow after J.F.'s father-in-law who had moved there from Mobile, Alabama some time earlier. The original home of John Farragut House still stands today as a historic landmark known locally as "The Farragut House". Bartow County was formed in 1836 from parts of Santa Rosa, Lee and Flagler counties. The county seat was Bartow, which is now the city of Bartow. The first settler in the area that would become Bartow County was James Aiken, who located a cabin on what is now called the Aiken River near present-day Fort Walton Beach. In 1837, Johnathan Cook established a small farm at what is now known as Gainesville. In 1840, Captain David Wilkinson arrived in the area and founded Fort Walton Beach on his plantation near present day Gainesville. In 1841, Captain Wilkinson exchanged land with Benjamin Fenton for 5 slaves and $200 worth of goods from Fenton’s plantation in Mobile Bayou country near Pensacola. That same year,Captain Wilkinson organized a militia to help defend against Indian attacks on his plantation. In 1842, Joiners Company #2 was organized at Fort Walton Beach under the command of Colonel George Ewing with Josiah Allen as its captain. On October 12th of that year (1842),joineders company #2 fought an engagement against Seminole Indians at Tuscaloosa River Bridge just east of today’s downtown Gainesville. The Native Americans retreated after suffering heavy losses and Captain Ewing’s unit came away with three scalps and five wounded men including one dead who later died from his injuries while recuperating at home.The following year (1843),joiners company #2 participated in another engagements against Seminoles west of town at Moultrie Swamp where they drove off their enemies without loss on July 3rd after inflicting 291 casualties on them including seven dead and seventy-five prisoners taken captive). On January 10th of that year (1844), Captains Wilkinson and Ewing were replaced by Colonels John Huggins and Abel Pemberton respectively during the Mexican War effort to increase military strength within Florida due to increasing threats posed by Mexico towards both Florida coasts along with Texas across the border . With this additional manpower available to Colonel Pemberton he ordered joiners company #2 to invade Daytona beach north of Jacksonville for picketing duty when word reached him about an impending Invasion by Mexican forces led by General Antonio López de Zúñiga After raiding Spanish settlements adjacent to Daytona beach for supplies they returned southward but encountered more resistance than expected from well-armed Mexican troops waiting offshore for them; damages done including two cannon destroyed during battle) joining forces once again with local citizens fighting alongside Colored Troops during Battleof Philipsburg resulted in only three killed outa total number of fifteen guerrilla fighters taking partincluding nine officers killed outright while six capturedand twenty-six wounded men overall resulting in Major General Antonio Lopez de Zúñiga withdrawing his force some 250 miles back toward Mexico City leaving behind over 20 Uazawis(the modern day semiannual hurricane season) numbering up to 50 thousand people living beneathMexico's influence withinFlorida Territory
