Bartow County, Florida was organized in 1835, and was named for General Andrew Bartow. The county seat is Gainesville. The history of the county is replete with struggles between various groups of people- Creek, Seminole, and African Americans. The first European to visit Bartow County was Captain James Cook in 1767 during his mapping of Australia’s eastern coast. Heading northeast from Sydney on the ships Endeavour and Discovery, Cook mapped areas that would become Bartow County. In 1821 a group of Creeks led by Chief Tallahassee moved from Indian Territory eastward into what is now Polk County after being displaced by white settlers. They were known as the Tallahassee Band of Creeks until their Removal in 1830. The area around Gainesville became part of Bartow County on March 7, 1835 when a bill was passed in the Florida House of Representatives to organize counties within Spanish Florida under English laws dating back to 1785 (the Constitution had not been ratified yet). At this time there were only 8 U.S. Grant territory titles including Everglades, Lakeland & Walton Counties which had all been formed since 1800 under President George Washington’s cabinet system which divided lands among British colonies on the East Coast as part of efforts to control immigration and resources vital to American expansion westward (Gainesville would be added four years later). In 1861 Confederate troops invaded Union territory near Fort Sumter while Georgia volunteers assisted with cavalry raids against nearby Union towns such as Jacksonville and Clearwater; these raids led Confederate General Robert Ewell to order his units into surrounding counties including Bartow where they burned several homes before withdrawing south towards Jacksonville where they eventually surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th effectively ending the war in South Carolina just days prior to Abraham Lincoln becoming president
